Home is where tha beer izz who's playing Roberto RAWKS! BFF!!!!!!! WE DON'T BOOK BANDS ON THE NET!!!!!!! archives

The Cave is Chapel Hill's oldest tavern--we're currently celebrating 40 years of beers!  Enjoy the draughts of wry humor, throw back a few drinks, play some pool, or just visit with one of the several dogs who bring their well-behaved owners.  Say hello to Mr. Mouse, the Cave's owner!  The Cave offers great local and national original live music acts almost every night.  So why don't you wander through and check us out...y'all come out and visit us soon!
  • What are your hours?
2:30 PM to 2:00 AM Monday through Sunday.  We usually have pot-luck dinner parties for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the 4th of July.  Ask a bartender just to be on the safe side.  We gotta party, too, you know...

  • Where is this fabulous place?
452 1/2 W. Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC.  Look for Uniquities (a clothing store), and the West End Wine Bar (a wine bar--duh!) Between Uniquities and the West End, there's a little set of steps leading down from the sidewalk.  It looks like it would lead to the basement of Uniquities.  And guess what?  It does!  And that's where we are.  The door is on the left at the bottom of the steps.  If you are on West Rosemary Street, look for Mama Dip's Country Kitchen (another restaurant), and head into the parking lot next to that building (on the west, or on the right as you face Dip's from Rosemary Street).  Parking in the back lot, however, is a no-no (if you get towed, don't blame us - we just work here!).  You'll see our back door:  The Ballroom Entrance.   If this seems unclear, call if you are lost: 919-968-9308
    Check out this here map.

  • Why aren't you in the phone book?
Because we only have a pay phone--it minimizes our bills.  So once you have the number, don't lose it - but if you do, it's usually in the calendar listings in the Independent (local weekly newspaper listing events of interest), and it's on the monthly calendar of music (available at the Cave), and it's on the matchbooks--in case you have one with you.

  • You claim to be Chapel Hill's oldest tavern.  How long ya been there?
Forty glorious years of beers! The Cave has been in continuous operation as a bar at least since 1968.  Some old fogies claim to have been in the Cave in 1964-1967, but we're not absolutely sure that their memories are accurate.  Could be...

  • Where can I park?
Good luck!!!  Seriously, there are metered spaces along Franklin, Rosemary, and Roberson Streets, and you don't have to feed the meter after 6 PM.  You can put yourself in competition for some of the lots in the area belonging to businesses which close at 5 or 6 PM, but this is not recommended for the faint-hearted.  We suggest that you be careful not to park in tow-zones (oh, it's not all that bad!  Tough it out--you'll get lucky!).

  • What should I bring?
Your ID.  We sell beer and liquor to folks 21 and older - we will probably card you if you look under forty.  So if you're feelin' old, come to the Cave for the juvenile thrill of being carded! You have to be 18 or over to choose from our vast array of coffin nails.  But you gotta be 21 to party at the Cave - we don't have all-ages shows.

  • What do you serve?
Beer and liquor, pretty much everything you can wish for!  As of October 11, 2005, we will be a private club.  You'll need to become a member in order to hang out at the Cave, but don't worry, it's easy to do!   Next time you drop by, just ask the friendly bartender if you can fill out a membership application.  It costs $5 for a membership..We don't have food, but there are many fine restaurants in the area, and there are places to get food cheaply if you're on a budget (who isn't?).

  • Do you have drink specials?
All of our drinks are special.

  • What does it cost to get in?
On weekends, the bands normally charge 3 to 5 bucks - a bargain at twice the price! We do have some bands specials, like Sundays - 2 bands for 2 bucks.  And most weeknights, the musicians pass the hat - usually a couple of dollars is a good hat tip, though more is always appreciated. Call if you need reassurance: 919-968-9308.

  • What types of music do you have? What time do the shows start?
We feature a variety of musical styles:  pop, rock, country, twang, folk, acoustic, funk, indie, punk, blues, bluegrass.  Most early shows start at 7:30, late shows at 10-ish.  For more information on the bands, check out the schedule or our index of artists, or call 919-968-9308.

  • How do I pay?  Do you take checks?  How about plastic?
We take cash and credit cards.

  • Can I bring my dog?
Yes.  The Cave is canine-friendly to friendly canines.  We have a water dish for them, (c'mon, you're not the only thirsty one!) and usually there are some doggie treats behind the bar.  Ask your bartender for one! So by all means, bring your best friend.  You should probably bring a leash, too.

  • How can I get my band booked at The Cave?
Here's what you've got to do:
    1. Mail a CD of your music and your press kit to 452 1/2 West Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, North Carolina 27516
    Address c/o Mr. Mouse, Booking
    2. Wait 2 weeks.
    3. Call the Cave at 919-370-7056 on a Tuesday or Thursday between 2:00pm and 5:00pm.  Ask to speak with Mr. Mouse.  He handles booking.
