The time has come for the torch to be passed to a new voice that has the power to truly shape the ever-changing direction of modern music - that of a fiercely independent woman, artist, and musician: Lucy Sumner of Vincent's Missing Ear.

| 2nd Annual Instro Summit!! |
Friday, 4/23, Saturday, 4/24, and Sunday 4/25 it's Instro Summit sposored by PBR and hosted by the one and only Crispy Bess! All Rawkin', No Squawkin'! Check out his line-up:
Bands playing Friday April 23rd:
07:30 PM - Killer Filler
Starting off the weekend (so that we can have fun and watch everybody
else), Hillsborough, NC's Killer Filler plays a royal mix of 60's
inspired surf, soul, & lounge, fronted by goofball
organist/guitarist Crispy Bess and Stoic guitar master Bryon Settle.
Picture a three-way cross between the Ventures, Booker T & the MG's
and Henry Mancini playing a rowdy party, and you'll know what we're up
to. Come early to witness the hijinx!
http://www.myspace.com/killerfiller
http://killerfillermusic.com/Site/Home.html
08:30 PM - The Guns of El Borracho
Fronted by skilled Luthier Wes Lambe (who has not only built some of the
best acoustic and electric guitars in the country, but has also had a
hand in fixing probably every stringed instrument in the Raleigh-Durham
area) The Guns of El Borracho have been described by listeners as
sounding like "Spaghetti Western goes Bebop" . The fact that Wes knocks
these numbers out on a home-built 8-string fanned-fret guitar of his
own creation makes it all the more intriguing.
http://www.myspace.com/thegunsofelborracho
09:30 PM - The Aqualads
When I revealed to people that Charlotte's legendary Aqualads were being
added to the Friday Night lineup, the response was huge - you would have
thought I signed up Dick Dale, Link Wray AND Elvis to play the evening
One of the great bands, along with Los Straitjackets, Satan's Pilgrims,
and Laika & the Cosmonauts that originated the 3rd wave surf
movement/revival way back when, come see the 'lads play modern surf they
way it should be played.
http://www.myspace.com/aqualads
10:30 PM - Blood Red River
Durham's Blood Red River knock out a good 'n' loud combo of Garage and
Spaghetti Western, similar in style to Mustang! and Huevos Rancheros.
Keep you fingers crossed, and they may bring their Go-go dancer along to
join in the Frug-fest
http://www.myspace.com/bloodredriver
http://www.reverbnation.com/bloodredriver
11:30 PM - The Weisstronauts
As they constantly remind us, Boston MA's Weisstronauts are NOT a surf
band, but their clever, fast, fun, & flat-out rockin' three-guitar
instrumentals would give ANY surf band a good lesson in how instrumental
music is supposed to be done. And they usually do it with tiny little
amps Watch them, and be impressed by well, everything!
http://www.myspace.com/weisstronauts
http://www.weisstronauts.com/
12:30 AM - Eszett
Finishing off our Friday night is Greensboro's Eszett, whose sound
ranges from hauntingly beautiful melodies to flat out rock EXPLOSIONS,
usually during the same song A crowd at Carrboro, NC's Reservoir, was
absolutely mesmerized by their half hour set; we hope you'll feel the
same way.
http://www.myspace.com/eszettrock
Bands Playing Saturday, April 24th
07:30 PM - The Mystery Men?
Opening our 2nd fabulous night of music is Atlanta's Mystery Men?, a fun
and quirky instrumental band that gets better every time they play; The
Killer Filler boys particularly enjoy their cover of Hot Butter's
"Popcorn"! Guitar player Jamie Galatas also works for the folks who put together the Cartoon Networks' Adult Swim. But be warned: We've been instructed to bop anyone on the head who says to them, Hey! can
you git my song on 'Squidbillies'?
http://www.myspace.com/themysterymenofsurf
08:30 PM - The Surge
The Surge's Eddie Katcheris one of those rare fellows who actually played surf music when it came out the FIRST time, and his enthusiasm
for the sound hasn't diminished one bit over the years; He also sponsors
his OWN instrumental festival, Atlanta'a Surf Fest, where we discovered
a lot of bands we're having up here for the Instro Summit (The Mystery
Men?
and Daikaiju, for instance). When Cave owner Mouse Mock heard the
Surge play at the first Instro Summit, he IMMEDIATELY said "We're doin' this next year!" If want to see how surf music should be played, look
no further.
http://www.myspace.com/thesurgeinstro
09:30 PM - 9th Wave
We're very happy to have Storr's CT's, 9th Wave back in Chapel Hill.
They were regulars at nearly every Sleazefest, playing their fun and friendly combination of Surf, Exotica & Hot Rod Music to happy
crowds. They are also unique in that they may be the only surf band with
a flute player in their ranks (the lovely Sandy Oceana, who also triples up on guitar, organ and sax!), and may also be the only Surf
Band with a single on the legendary Waffle House jukebox! Watch them, and be as charmed as zillions of Sleazefest patrons were.
http://www.9thwavesurf.com
http://www.myspace.com/9thwave
10:30 PM - The X-Rayons reunion
Although they never officially broke up, Pittsboro's X-Rayons (led by Steve Carr, of Carr amplifiers fame) haven't played a show in over a
decade. We're thrilled that they are getting back together for our
occasion, playing their own unique 60's-meets the-80's postmodern
version of instrumental rock. They were fun to watch back then - and I
bet they still are now!
11:30 PM - Atomic Mosquitos
Veterans of our first Instro Summit, Alexandria, VA's Atomic Mosquitos have been belting out kickass third wave surf in the greater DC area for
a while now. Their current record, "Meltdown" got an enthusiastic rave from the UK instrumental 'zine Pipeline , and the US's Continental. They blew everyone away at our last Summit, playing songs inspired by everything from Aram Khachaturian to the Simpsons to
Mountain Dew.
http://www.myspace.com/atomicmosquitos
http://www.atomicmosquitos.com/
12:30 AM -Phatlynx's Link Wray jam session
Hopefully closing out our Saturday with big sloppy bang, Phatlynx is
Crispy Bess (Killer Filler, ex-SCOTS) Groves Willer (Evil Weiner,
ex-Family Dollar Pharaohs), Robby Poore (ex-Schmidtones, ex-Drags), and Colonel
Dave Perry
(Twilighter, ex-Dirty Little Heaters), knocking out Link
Wray-style songs in a fun-filled set o' badass noise. But this isn't
just a rockin' four piece; anyone who knows the songs and wants to sit
in is welcome, especially for the very end, where we hope to have as
many people as we can possibly fit into the Cave all playing the instro
classic "Rumble" at the same time! If you can play guitar, have an amp, and can play "Rumble" , come on down!
Bands playing Sunday, April 25th
07:00 PM - The Atom Bumz
Annapolis Marylands' Atom Bumz play a mess of old-school instrumental
music, but chuck the traditional two guitars bass n' drums lineup and
add a sax/lap steel into the mix, which adds a whole new dimension to a
lot of old favorites. They could also well be the only band this year to
give songs like "Surf Rider" and "Sleepwalk" their proper instrumental
due, so they're worth checking out.
http://www.myspace.com/atombumz
08:00 PM - Jaafar!
Our personal nominee for "Odd-Band Out", Durham, NC's Jaafar are a self-described "Jazz-Arabic-Funk-Fusion ensemble" that's been described
by others as "Santana with a Middle Eastern accent." A personal visit to to see the fellers in action found them more in Zappa and Yes territory. These descriptions may sound a little too highbrow for the Summit's usual fare, but be assured that while they're different, they can still rock with the best of 'em. Pay attention - you might learn something!
http://jaafarmusic.com
09:00 PM - The Noseriders
Formed after the demise of the semi-legendary Stunt Doubles,
Wilmington's Noseriders offer surf music with a few new and refreshing
twists, such a reverb-less and overdriven lead guitar playing against a
reverbed second guitarist (the exact opposite of tradition), and liberal
use of Moog and Theremin to add a new-wave edge to the fun. The
Noseriders also have the distinction of being the ONLY surf band at the
Summit who actually surf--regularly --in their home turf, which pretty
much gives them the street cred at this hoedown. Give 'em their props,
and enjoy their show.
http://www.myspace.com/thenoseriders
10:00 PM - The Krektones
Featuring members from Mad Tea Party, Asheville, NC's Krektones play a
fun party-time mix of instrumental music, the kind that's perfect for
swillin' a beer in one hand, and holding your guy or gal in the other.
Warning:
May cause butt-wigglin'.
http://www.myspace.com/krektones
11:00 PM - Daikaiju
Considered by many to be THE band pushing instrumental surf rock to new
& modern horizons, Daikaju offsets such lofty stuff with a wild
"Man Or Astro-Man meets The Power Rangers" stage show, and songs that,
significant or not, flat out ROCK! We're honored to have these folks at
the Summit, and hope they'll somehow be able to run their multi-media
extravaganza inside our tiny little club. If not, they still rock!
http://www.myspace.com/daikaiju
Please note: many of these bands also have Facebook pages as well!
And there's more! We've gotten a deejay, Baltimore's (and Elvisfests')
DJ Bump
to come one down and spin some classic instro 45's between sets.
What more could you ask for?
Interested? Tickets are 10 dollars per night on Friday and Saturday, and eight bucks on Sunday. The best deal is a three-day pass, which only sets you back twenty-one dollars for the whole weekend! I'd like
to note that the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival, which is the same weekend, has ticket prices for one night (Thursday) that cost a buck MORE than what we're charging for the whole shebang! How'z that for a
recession buster?
Wow! That's some pile of entertainment thar! Merch will be available in the back, three day passes will be available. Hope to see you there!
|
|
|
You may have noticed that the benches in our back Ballroom are gone. In their place will be a rotating cast of furniture provided by Good Bones vintage furniture, featuring mid-century furniture, lamps, vintage vinyl, and lots of other stuff. Come check it out!

| Pierced Arrows
|
| Friday 3/12/10, 10:00pm $10* • Pierced Arrows
After a staggering 20-year campaign and a fervent fan following, Dead Moon called it a day. While some of Dead Moon's more ardent fans went into mourning, figuratively waving rosaries and holy cards, Fred and Toody were already auditioning drummers. Pierced Arrows was born.
A Pierced Arrows performance is a form of communion. They are there to see you just as much as you are to see them. You are not likely to find them cowering in a backstage corner. Though they are there to work, and work hard, don't be surprised to find them hanging with friends and fans, checking out the opening act. This is their life's work, and life is just the beginning if you really believe.
*Advanced tickets go on sale Friday February 5th, 2:30p.m. at the Cave for $10 each. Get your tickets now due to limited capacity. The Cave is small - duh!
|
| Bowling Weague!! |
| Every Sunday the Cave hosts a video Bowling Weague. We're starting things off with a Super Sunday Super Bowling party February 7th. Come sign up, teams are forming now! Sign up is at 5:00. Create your avatar and join in the fun!

Saturday 10/31/09, 8:00pm $5 • Dead Celebrity Party featuring Taz Halloween with special ghoul friends

The 5th annual BLACKBEARD'S LOST WEEKEND is coming!
Friday and Saturday - November 13th and 14th
|
Blackbeard's Lost Weekend is a filthy, primal garage rock festival of the lowest and most repugnant order. BBLW started five long years ago and was originally dubbed the Freaky Tiki. Later it was decided to honor North Carolina's greatest historical figure and scum of the earth Edward Teach: Blackbeard. Check out the lineup below:
|
|
|
Friday, 11/13/09, 7:30pm Pinche Gringo & The Lonesome Chihuahuas Satan's Youth Ministers The Humms Trashcans
A piece of the sadly defunct Spinns, Pinche Gringo is the one-man band garage/blues project of Josh. It's a sound that would fit perfectly at home on a label like Bomp! Records. Soulful, dirty, trashy and rawkus.
in the Indian-cursed and God-blessed area of Northwest Alabama, existed a deep, black hole. The area is frozen in decades past, and still unable to buy beer on Sunday. But a void in the region's fertile soils spawned the Church of the Psychedelic Goat. A collective of souls emerged with it, comprising the outreach program deemed Satan's Youth Ministers.
The Humms - completely ace garage funtime! Surf, brilliant pop chorus - melodic with a few twists and turns in it like Mercury Rev on amphetamines - certainly far from the two-chord end of the garage spectrum. If there's any justice in the world this would be a huge hit!
Trashcans? Think Back From the Grave, Nuggets, Pebbles, and Killed By Death comps, The Mummies, The Sonics, Link Wray - that sorta stuff.
In the smoker's lounge: DJ Redbyrd
|
|
Saturday, 11/14/09, 7:30pm Dirty Little Heaters The Electric Cycles Nervous Habits Rough Hands Thee Crucials
The Dirty Little Heaters are three like minded people making VERY LOUD rock music.
The Electric Cycles are four pale dudes with a lot of vintage gear who listen to obscure old records.
Nervous Habits are a punk rock band from Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Rough Hands are four people who like girls and want to play music that makes other people want to dance with each other. So, come dance with them!
"AWHOO!" + I-IV-V x Beer = Thee Crucials. They bond over race records, ass pockets of whisky, and the Norton catalog. Instant Party - a total rock and roll abortion!
In the smoker's lounge: DJ Midnite Cowboy

|
|
|
Saturday 8/1/09, 7:30pm $5 • Ashley Atkins
Ashley Atkins has been building an audience the old fashioned way: playing show after show, year after year. As some one who's shared many musicians with her over the years, I may be biased, but I think she's only gotten better and better.
|
|
|
Saturday, 8/1/09, 10:00pm $5 • The Hwy 54 Band with Rebekah Pulley
Originally conceived as a blues band, The Hwy 54 Band soon realized that there was more to their sound than just straight blues - influences come from a wide range of artists, from Robert Johnson to Led Zeppelin to Jimmy Hendriks to Neil Young to Bob Dylan and the Duhks.
Rebekah Pulley plays soulful Southern Pop. If Kathleen Edwards and The Band took a ride downtown on a balmy, summer night to meet Ray Lamontagne and Jenny Lewis for drinks at an old dive bar with walls full of stories and character, it would sound like her.

Newsflash: We No Longer Have Time For Newsletters!
Overworked Cave Employees "Too Busy" to write these things
After a long and difficult eight seconds of thought
earlier this afternoon, Cavern Tavern owner Mister Mouse issued a press
release in the South Wing of the Mouse House stating, "Oh, to heck with
it!" "Really!," continued the harried tavern
keeper, "Between booking and paying the bills and keeping the staff in
line - I'm looking at you, Groves! - who has the time to come up with snarky yet informative newsletters?"
The Cave's I.T. staff, also known as Josh Sokal, added, "And after
that, do you have any idea how long it takes to write up, and then
typeset, and then run it through the offset press, and then scan, and
then run through Optical Character Recognition software? Just removing
all the swear words takes forever!" With this
announcement, the demise of the Cavern Tavern Newsletter could come at
any time. We will continue to keep you updated with all the latest
breaking...
